Peirce and the Spontaneous Conjectures of Instinctive Reason.Bernardo J. Canteñs - 2002 - Proceedings of the American Catholic Philosophical Association 76:89-101.
In this paper, I will analyze Charles S. Peirce’s “A Neglected Argument for the Reality of God.” I want to argue for two conclusions: 1) that Peirce’s conception of spontaneous conjectures of instinctive reason allows for a rationally justified belief in the reality of God; and 2) that this belief is not the result of a sound argument or even a complete argument and thus is not a secure belief. This paper is divided into three parts. First, I will explain (...)

  5. Suarez and Meinong on Beings of Reason and Non-Existent Objects.Bernardo J. Cantens - 1999 - Dissertation, University of Miami
The central purpose of this dissertation is to compare Suarez's treatment of beings of reason with Meinong's treatment of non-existent objects. The dissertation is divided into three parts. In the first part I analyze Suarez's view of beings of reason. I do this first by giving a general overview of Suarez's philosophy ; second, by explaining Suarez's notion of real being ; and finally, by analyzing Suarez's notion of beings of reason . In the second part I analyze Meinong's view (...)

  8. A Solution to the Problem of Personal Identity in the Metaphysics of Thomas Aquinas.Bernardo J. Cantens - 2001 - Proceedings of the American Catholic Philosophical Association 75:121-134.
This paper presents a solution to the problem of personal identity over time in Thomas’s metaphysics. I argue that Professor Gracia’s solution to the problem of personal identity, existence, and Professor Stump’s solution, form or the human soul, are not only compatible but also necessarily interdependent on one another. This argument rests on (1) the special nature of the human soul, and (2) the metaphysical claim that for Thomas the human soul and existence are inseparable. First, I refine the problem (...)

  9. Suárez on Beings of Reason.Bernardo J. Canteñs - 2003 - American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly 77 (2):171-187.
Beings of reason or non-existent objects have always been a source of mind-boggling paradoxes that have vexed philosophers and thinkers in the past and present. Consider Bertrand Russell’s paradox: “if A and B are not different, then the difference between A and B does not subsist. But how can a non-entity be the subject of a proposition?” Or Meinong’s paradox: “There are objects of which it is true that there are no such objects.” At the root of these troubling conundrums (...)

Huge variation in obtaining ethical permission for a non-interventional observational study in Europe.Dylan W. de Lange, Bertrand Guidet, Finn H. Marsh, Sandra Oeyen, Bernardo Bollen Pinto, Wojciech Szczeklik, Ximena Watson, Tilemachos Zafeiridis & Hans Flaatten - 2019 - BMC Medical Ethics 20 (1):39.
Ethical approval must be obtained before medical research can start. We describe the differences in EA for an pseudonymous, non-interventional, observational European study. Sixteen European national coordinators of the international study on very old intensive care patients answered an online questionnaire concerning their experience getting EA. N = 8/16 of the NCs could apply at one single national ethical committee, while the others had to apply to various regional ECs and/or individual hospital institutional research boards. The time between applying for (...)

Wiley. pp. 69-100.
Meeting 5G high bandwidth rates, ultra-low latencies, and high reliabilities requires of network infrastructures that automatically increase/decrease the resources based on their customers’ demand. An autonomous and dynamic management of a 5G network infrastructure represents a challenge, as any solution must account for the radio access network, data plane traffic, wavelength allocation, network slicing, and network functions’ orchestration. Furthermore, federation among administrative domains (ADs) must be considered in the network management. Given the increased dynamicity of 5G networks, artificial intelligence/machine learning (...)

Characterization of the unconfined compressive strength test in rocks by fine granulometry.Ernesto Patricio Feijoo Calle & Bernardo Andrés Feijoo Guevara - 2020 - Minerva 1 (3):5-14.
This work presents a proposal for the characterization of the UnconfinedCompressive Strength test, through a series of operations that can be carried outwithout inconvenience in the field. Initially, fresh rock samples are obtained from outcropsin the area and specimens of specific dimensions are made. After the test specimenelaboration phase, crushing and granulometric classification tests are carried out witha set of specimens and in parallel with a second group, UCS tests are carried out. With theresults, the rock is characterized by graphing (...)

Bernard of Clairvaux, Peter Abelard and Heloise on the Definition of Love.Constant J. Mews - 2004 - Revista Portuguesa de Filosofia 60 (3):633 - 660.
This paper examines the thinking of Bernard of Clairvaux about love in relationship to the ideas of his two famous contemporaries, Peter Abelard and Héloise. It looks at Bernard's intellectual debt to William of Champeaux on issues of sin and grace, and to William of Saint-Thierry for ideas about how amor evolves into caritas. Bernard makes a stronger link between amor and dilectio, and introduces use of the Song of Songs, to explain how worldly love can develop into spiritual love. (...)

Lietuvos energetinio saugumo politikos poveikis visuomenės socialinei sanglaudai.Dainius Genys & Ričardas Krikštolaitis - 2016 - Filosofija. Sociologija 26 (4).
Straipsnio tikslas – empiriškai ištirti energetinio saugumo politikos poveikį Lietuvos socialinei sanglaudai. Straipsnis paremtas J. Jenson (1998) ir P. Bernardo (1999) atliktais tyrimais bei pasiūlytomis analitinėmis kategorijomis. Konceptuali schema identifikuoja konkrečias – ekonominę, politinę ir sociokultūrinę – aktyvumo sritis, kurios analizuojamos tikrinant dichotomijas tarp visuomenės požiūrio bei visuomenės elgsenos. Šios dichotomijos leidžia išskirti empirines analizės dimensijas, kurių kiekybinės išraiškos leidžia aprašyti energetinio saugumo politikos poveikį Lietuvos socialinei sanglaudai.

Essays on Spinoza's Ethical Theory ed. by Matthew J. Kisner and Andrew Youpa.J. Thomas Cook - 2017 - Journal of the History of Philosophy 55 (2):352-353.
In the introductory chapter to this collection, the editors point out that, until recently, most Anglophone Spinoza scholarship has been focused on the metaphysics and epistemology of the Ethics. But according to Kisner and Youpa, Spinoza thought that metaphysics and epistemology were significant chiefly because they are required for understanding the more important part of his project—the ethical doctrine developed in the last three parts of the work. Ethica was so-titled because it is a book about ethics. In recent years, the (...)

ABSTRACT This symposium brings together commentaries on Serene J. Khader’s Decolonizing Universalism: A Transnational Feminist Ethic from Linda Martín Alcoff, Sunaina Arya, and Olúfẹ'mi O. Táíwò with a reply from Khader. Khader’s book aims to develop a conception of feminism that is both universalist and anti-imperialist. Central to this feminism are (a) the idea that the normative core of feminism is opposition to sexist oppression and (b) the idea that the role of normative concepts in transnational feminist praxis is a (...)
